Stem Cells and Your Teeth
Stem cells are amazing cells that have the ability to generate new cells. Certain types of stem cells can even differentiate, or turn into various specialized cells. This allows them to regenerate organs, bones, and tissue and treat a variety of diseases and injuries from Parkinson's disease to joint replacement. Adult stem cells are used.
Stem cells in teeth
Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently found that stem cells can be harvested from healthy tooth pulp. They are both accessible and readily available and can be harvested from:
- Baby (deciduous) teeth
- Wisdom teeth
- Permanent teeth
With this new access to stem cells in healthy teeth, both children and adults can have their own stem cells cryopreserved in an affordable and non-invasive manner. What that means is that today’s dentists can be on the cutting edge of tomorrow's scientific breakthroughs.
