Should I quit my Dentist job?

The word Doctor derives largely from the concept of "one who teaches." I find myself constantly trying to teach my patients about all-things-dental. In fact, I may have to quit my day job as a Denver Cosmetic dentist, and become a full-time blogger or internet writer.

I am currently working on a series on "How to read and understand online reviews." You'll see some more editions before long. Today I started a series on "Why you need a GREAT dental exam." I see new patients almost daily, so we spend a lot of time helping people understand what's right and what's wrong in their mouths (see what to expect on your first visit). I believe that patients deserve sooooo much better than what they usually receive. Most patients just simply haven't had the opportunity to have personalized attention (see Why Choose Us?").

Ok, I've decided....I AM keeping my day job (as a cosmetic dentist). I'll just have to talk faster, and type faster... so hang on!

Insights into a Cosmetic Dentistry career

I just finished breakfast with a long-term dentist friend of mine. We've had a standing annual breakfast meeting for about 15 years now. Time flies... As I write this I am sitting in a Starbuck's. Not just ANY Starbuck's, but one that used to be my old dental office. It's actually sort of creepy. Who knew then that a little ramshackle dental building would later be converted to a neighborhood coffee hotspot.

Back in 1991 I started my first dental practice in Denver, near the DU campus. Even from the beginning, one of the first organizations I became involved with was the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. I placed my first veneers almost 20 years ago now.

Even though, the years are starting to really add up, I still enjoy cosmetic dentistry more than anything else I do. I appreciate the opportunity to change smiles and change lives. I am looking forward to the next 15 years too (though I'm fairly sure we have enough Starbuck's now).

So if you are looking for veneers, or maybe to revitalize your smile, contact me today. I'll even buy you a cup of Starbuck's if you mention my old office...

Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is the result of stimuli like food or drink coming into contact with the dentin layer of the tooth. The dentin is usually protected by the hard enamel layer except at the root of the tooth. The reason it hurts is that the dentin contains channels that lead to the nerve inside the tooth, which sends a pain signal to the brain when touched.

Tooth sensitivity, then, happens when the dentin is exposed somehow. Receding gums expose the dentin at the base of the tooth, leading to a feeling of pain around the root. This can be the result of gum disease or irritating the gums by brushing too forcefully.

Chipped and broken teeth may also be extra-sensitive. Bacteria can live in the damaged section of the tooth and reach the dentin layer underneath. Dr. Greenhalgh is an experienced cosmetic dentist who can restore damaged teeth and decrease the sensitivity and pain.

Good oral hygiene is necessary to prevent tooth decay, which also causes pain and sensitivity, especially near the roots. Cavities at the root can expose the dentin layer.

There are multiple treatments for sensitive teeth. For mild cases, special toothpaste may be used to dampen nerve responses. Painful or severe cases should be treated by a dentist, who may affix a white filling or sealant to act in place of the enamel where it has decayed or been undermined.

To find out what a cosmetic dentist in the Denver/Lakewood area can do to reduce the pain of sensitive teeth, please contact Scott Greenhalgh, DDS today.

Stem cells advancements!

As you know I have an interest in the role that preserving stem cell from dental sources can have on the future of medicine.

I found an interesting source called "latest Stem Cell News". here's their link: http://www.stem-cells-news.com/1/

We are going to see some amazing breakthroughs-things that even now still smack of science fiction or medical thriller novels.

For now, here's some down-to-earth things you can do: stay apprised on the developments by visiting sites like these, and you can also preserve your own family's stem cells from either baby teeth or wisdom teeth. Visit my site at www.ScottGreenhalghDDS.com to learn more.

We are leading the Denver dental community with our enrollment in two different Stem cell preservation services; one called Bioeden, and the other StemSave. Each have different purposes.

If you have more interest in how you can preserve Stem cells for the later medical use for your family, contact us today at: (303) 988-9060.

Hey, check us out on Google!

I had a few minutes to check what was happening out on the web. You might know I am in the middle of writing a series about "How to use reviews to find a new Dentist".

As I was wandering around the web, and searched for "denver cosmetic dentist". I wound up at Google. How exciting to see that our practice has the most reviews listed by Google! And to their credit, Google has condensed a lot of information and a lot of quotes from patients who have posted reviews (in a lot of places).

I encourage you to visit the Google reviews. (and thanks to those of you who have been such great supporters, we look forward to serving you again in 2010!).

I was pleasantly surprised to see how all of those web-bots summarized our practice!

How to use Dentist Reviews (Part One)

Here is the first installment of my series about how to read and use reviews online and finding a cosmetic dentist in Denver. I'll provide a number of tips that are useful for both finding a new dentist as well as buying anything online.

Number One: Look for dentist reviews that reflect your same interests or concerns. Here's what I mean. If you are looking for a new dentist, then determine a few of your top preferences. They could be things like: easy to talk to, comforting, able to solve your dental problem, gentle, good with kids, good with anxious or fearful patients, or proven results with cosmetic dentistry.

Take those two or three top criteria and go looking for reviews that comment (good or badly) about those things. In this instance, SKIP any of the reviews that don't mention your top items. Look for examples in the reviews where a patient comments specifically about your concerns.
Another way to use this first tip is to also search for reviews that describe the same results that you would like to have. Things like: "He put me at ease", "I always had problems getting numb, but He did it!", I had some other veneers and had problems, but Dr. Greenhalgh fixed them!" or even other things like, the staff are so friendly, the hygienist is gentle...

Online reviews can be very revealing about how an office really works. By following these tips, you will increase the certainty that you will find a dentist and dental office that matches your values. (you can view some of our reviews here). More tips coming soon!
