Lumineers®: No-Prep Veneers
The name Lumineers® has been very visible recently and some people come to our cosmetic dentistry office asking for them. They are a type of porcelain veneer which is extra-thin.
All porcelain veneers are thin but Lumineers are even thinner and are often compared to contact lenses. They are made by a California company called Den-Mat Holdings, LLC which manufactures a variety of dental products and materials. For Lumineers they use a proprietary porcelain trade-named Cerinate®. It is feldspathic porcelain reinforced by leucite crystals, which makes it extra-strong. This is why Lumineers can be thinner than other porcelain veneers.
They have been given a great deal of positive marketing and advertising, but not all dentists are willing to offer them. One of the selling points is that they require very little tooth enamel to be removed in order to make room for them. All porcelain veneers are placed without much tooth enamel being removed. But Lumineers are promoted as being a reversible procedure since they require virtually no enamel to be removed – hence the term "no-prep veneers".
Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Greenhalgh will give you Lumineers if he thinks you will get a good result. If he recommends another solution it will usually be other types of porcelain veneers.
Lumineers are useful for:
- Someone who is not too picky about what they want changed in their smile
- People who are ultra-conservative and don’t want much done to their teeth
- People who don’t grind or clench their teeth
You may need to have more Lumineers placed to get the spacing right and to blend colors. They definitely have their place in cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Greenhalgh will first listen to your goals and expectations and if Lumineers are what you want and he knows that you will be satisfied with them, he will go ahead.
