For the seventh year in a row the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and the Wrigley Oral Healthcare Program are sponsoring National Dental Hygiene Month to recognize the work of dental hygienists around the country and raise awareness of the importance that good dental hygiene plays in overall health.
This month, you can thank your dental hygienist for keeping your teeth healthy and your mouth happy, and you can also focus on making sure you are taking the time to give your teeth and gums the daily care that will keep you smiling well for a lifetime.
This year, the message of National Dental Hygiene Month is to Do the Daily 4:
1. Brush your teeth twice daily to thoroughly clean your teeth and reduce plaque buildup. Make sure to brush for two minutes, twice a day.
2. Floss between teeth. Although reports of a recent study called into question the need to floss, it really is a necessary part of your dental hygiene routine. Floss can reach places that your toothbrush just can’t in order to get rid of food debris and prevent buildup.
3. Rinse with mouthwash or at least water after meals to keep decay at bay in your mouth.
4. Chew sugar-free gum, fibrous veggies, and even cheese can help clean your teeth.
